Joel Oleson Sucks! (No, Not Really)

Update: In case you didn’t get the entire story, this article is part of an elaborate prank that several speakers in the SharePoint community played during SPTechCon in 2011. Read the explanation here. I don’t hate Joel. We’re not really enemies. He’s not really retiring. At least not in the way you think.

OK, so I’ve had it with this guy.

Just a couple of months ago, the ‘guru’ of SharePoint, Joel Oleson, decided we weren’t valuable enough for his precious time, so he decided to bail out and leave us hanging.

If you haven’t read the previous post about it, here it is:

Joel Oleson Has Left the Building–And Good Riddance…

So, now I’m here at SPTechCon and we’re all trying to cope as best we can, hugging each other to try to understand how someone can be so cruel to the community as Joel has been.

And what do I see? Well, there in the lobby area, his holiness Joel Oleson hangs around like nothing has happened. We’ve just barely managed to dry our tears when he just comes back into the community, probably with no other purpose than to break our hearts again.

What is it now, did you grow tired of not having thousands of people worshipping you? Did you suddenly get a bad conscience?

Well, I’m not having it. I will not let the community be devastated again. I will stand up against the evilness you represent, you selfish bastard.

Stop! I forbid you to come back. Now it is us who must shun away.

Joel Oleson, I hate you! You suck! Retire already!

We don’t need you!

I previously did SharePoint. These days, I try new things to see where I can find the passion. If you have great ideas, cool projects, or is in general an awesome person, get in touch and we might find out together.

  1. Hey, Bjorn, I’ve never met Joel personally, but know there is MUCH history with Joel, Microsoft, MVPs, community, etc. However, I find this direct personal attack crosses the line, and will not result in any productive discussions.

  2. Bjorn,
I think I detect sarcasm here, but it might help to point that out. I know sometime you just like to make a statement to get noticed, but is this really what you want to be known for?

  3. I’m sorry you have such a negative opinion of Joel. I can’t reconcile your rant with the Joel I’ve met at conferences and other professional and not so professional (SharePint) gatherings. Joel has always been, dare I use an old fashion term: a gentleman. He has given his time and efforts to promote SharePoint and the community. Has he made a profit doing so, yes. I don’t fault him for that. Nothing says you have to be a pauper to be an evangelist; though the two go hand in hand more often than not. So when he decides to cut down and spend more time with family I certainly can’t fault him. I’ve been there before as an evangelist for the Engineering S/W community (312 days on the road) and my family suffered for it. Your entitled to your opinion but it’s not the experience I’ve had with him or for that matter any of the “names” in SharePoint.
